How to Rotate a PDF and Fix Sideways Pages for Good

You scan a stack of documents, open the PDF, and half the pages are lying on their side. Or someone sends you a file where one landscape page is rotated the wrong way and you have to tilt your head to read it. Rotating a PDF is simple in principle, but the rotation has to actually save into the file, not just spin the page in your viewer and snap back next time you open it.

This guide explains the difference between viewer rotation and saved rotation, how to fix individual pages versus a whole document, and how to straighten a batch of files in one go.

Viewer rotation vs. saved rotation

When you rotate a page inside a PDF reader, you are often just changing how it is displayed on screen: the moment you close the file and reopen it, the page is sideways again. To fix it permanently, the rotation has to be written into the PDF itself. That is what a proper rotate tool does: it re-saves the file with the new orientation baked in, so it stays correct wherever it is opened, printed, or sent.

Per-page or whole document

Two situations come up:

  • One or two pages are wrong. A scanner fed a page in sideways, but the rest are fine. You rotate only the offending pages: 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, or 180° for an upside-down page.
  • The whole file is wrong. Every page came out rotated the same way. You rotate the entire document at once rather than page by page.

Rotating several files at once

If you have a folder of scans that all came out sideways the same way, fixing them one at a time is tedious. A batch mode lets you load several PDFs and apply the same rotation to all of them in a single step, useful at the end of a long scanning session.

How our Rotate tool works

Our Rotate PDF tool shows you a live preview of each page so you can see the orientation before you commit. Rotate a single page, rotate the whole document, or load several files and rotate them all together. When it looks right, download the corrected PDF, with the rotation saved permanently into the file, not just displayed.

Rotation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript-based PDF technology. Your files are never uploaded to a server. There is no fixed server-side file-size limit, although very large PDFs may be limited by your browser and device memory. The corrected file is built on your own machine and downloaded directly.

After you rotate

Straightening pages is usually a clean-up step before something else:

  • Several straightened scans that belong together? Merge them into one document.
  • Only need a few of the corrected pages? Split them out.
  • File heavy after scanning? Compress it before archiving or sending.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate a PDF and save it permanently?

Open the Rotate PDF tool, load your file, and choose the rotation for the pages you want: 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, or 180°. Download the result. The rotation is written into the file itself, so it stays correct everywhere, not just in your current viewer.

Can I rotate only certain pages instead of the whole document?

Yes. You can rotate individual pages while leaving the rest untouched, or rotate the entire document at once, whichever the file needs.

Can I rotate several PDFs at the same time?

Yes. Batch mode lets you load multiple files and apply the same rotation to all of them in one step, which is handy after scanning a stack of documents.

Why does my PDF go back to sideways after I rotate it?

That happens when the rotation was only applied in the viewer, not saved into the file. Our tool re-saves the PDF with the new orientation built in, so it stays corrected wherever you open it.

Are my files uploaded when I rotate them?

No. Rotation is done entirely in your browser, so your documents never leave your device. There is no fixed server-side file-size limit, although very large PDFs may be limited by your browser and device memory.
